About the destination
Know which Čepić you are visiting
This is the locality of Čepić in the municipality of Oprtalj, in northern Istria. It is not Polje Čepić in the Kršan area. The official Oprtalj-Čepić trail 263 is a 19.4-kilometre circular hike, rated medium, with an estimated walking time of about six and a half hours. It begins near Oprtalj at Sveta Lucija, reaches the village above the Čepićka vala karst valley, and returns to the starting area. Use the official trail page to assess the route before choosing it; this is a full hike, not a short village walk.
Church and landscape
The trail description identifies the Church of St Mary of Snow in Čepić as dating from 1492. Its bell tower is 15 metres high, and the source notes a Glagolitic plaque inside dated 1588. The route also points out natural rock formations near the entrance to the valley. These details make the trail worthwhile for walkers interested in rural heritage and karst scenery, but the route page does not confirm that the church interior is open to visitors. Check locally before planning entry. Oprtalj itself has a preserved gate and Venetian loggia, but those are separate stops in the municipality’s hilltop town.
