Destination

Nin

A historic royal town on a tiny lagoon island, surrounded by sandy beaches, salt pans, birdlife and views towards the Velebit mountains.

About the destination

Nin’s old centre occupies a small island in a shallow lagoon, reached by bridges and easily explored on foot. Its compact streets bring together archaeological remains and landmarks such as the Church of the Holy Cross, the parish church and the statue of Gregory of Nin. The town’s long history stretches from an important ancient settlement to a centre of early Croatian rulers and bishops.

Outside the walls, the lagoon opens towards sandy shores including Queen’s Beach, salt pans, medicinal mud habitats and rich birdlife, with Velebit rising across the water. The salt tradition and the replica of the early Croatian boat Condura Croatica add further local stories. Check museum, church, saltworks, beach and activity information before visiting, since access, tours and services vary by season.

Where to stay

Nin is well suited to a flexible stay in a private apartment, holiday house, villa or small campsite in the town and its immediate area. Use the Town of Nin Tourist Board accommodation information to compare a base near the old town with one closer to the sandy shore. For a resort stay in nearby Zaton, Zaton Holiday Resort is a separate option; check location, facilities and availability directly with the provider.

Food and drink

Plan meals around the old town and lagoon after checking the tourist board’s Gastro kutak listings, which cover restaurants, konobas and cafés in Nin and the surrounding area. If you are staying in nearby Zaton, Gradele Grill Bar at the resort’s western beach serves grilled and seafood dishes. Confirm the current menu, service period and reservation details with the chosen venue.

Evenings and events

Spend the evening walking over Nin’s bridges and through its compact old centre. For concerts, festivals and other local events, check the Nin Tourist Board’s events calendar for dates and venues.
