About the destination
Plan around the mountain conditions
Northern Velebit is a high mountain park, so the visiting season depends on snow cover, and entrance information can change with weather. Babić Siča is the main entry and a place to get visitor information; Velebit House, the park’s information centre, is in Krasno. The Zavižan area offers a mountain hut, the country’s oldest high-altitude weather station and paths toward nearby peaks. The park identifies Babić Siča, approached from Oltari and Krasno, as the easiest way to reach Zavižan. Check the park’s current visitor information, road access and forecast before setting out.
Choose a section of the Premužić Trail
The famous Premužić Trail crosses the park for 16 kilometres; its full 46-kilometre route runs from Zavižan toward Baške Oštarije. Rather than treating it as a short loop, choose a section and plan your return. The park describes the trail as having virtually no steep ascents, and places Rossi’s shelter about two hours’ walk from Zavižan. Before choosing your section, check the park’s current access notices and confirm the trail conditions. Conditions on Velebit can change quickly, so bring clothing and footwear suited to the mountain and confirm access with the park.
