Destination

Ston

Ston makes the connection between salt, trade and defence visible: its saltworks sit beneath walls that shape the landscape. Pair a town walk with saltmaking history.

About the destination

Read the landscape from the town

Begin in Ston itself and notice how the streets, salt pans and defensive walls fit together. The appeal is not just the length of the fortifications, but the way they explain the relationship between a small town and a valuable working landscape. A walk through the centre is a useful first step before deciding how much climbing to include.

Choose your main visit

The walls link Ston and Mali Ston, but a wall walk is a more demanding activity than strolling through either settlement. Decide on a suitable section using the operator’s current access information. If saltmaking is your main interest, plan a separate visit to the saltworks instead of assuming it is included with the walls. You can also keep the day at town level and leave the steep sections for another occasion.

Before you set out

Expect steps and exposure on the fortifications. Carry water, use footwear with grip and reconsider the climb in strong heat or unsuitable weather. Confirm the open route, entrance arrangements and ticket conditions with the walls operator. For visits connected with salt production, consult Solana Ston separately. Neither a full wall circuit nor a salt harvest demonstration should be assumed to be available on every visit.

Before you set out

Plan your visit

Choose the pace, check the journey and keep a second option for the day.

Time to allow

Give Ston and one main visit half a day, or a full day with Mali Ston and a meal. This is an editorial estimate. Choose the walls or saltworks first; their entrances, tickets and visiting arrangements are separate.

Without a car

Confirm the exact bus stop or transfer and your return before planning a wall walk. Ston and Mali Ston are distinct stops in the day. If finishing at a different point, decide how you will return; do not assume the wall route is a flat town connection.

Arriving by car

Choose signed parking for the entrance you intend to use and check current payment rules. Keep the return to your vehicle in the plan if walking towards Mali Ston. Parking or a restaurant booking does not include wall or saltworks admission.

Rain, heat and a change of plan

The walls involve steps and exposed sections: choose a cooler hour and suitable footwear, and reconsider in unsuitable weather. For rain or strong heat, stay at town level with a meal or a confirmed visit. Saltworks access and any harvest activity need separate confirmation.
