Explore the castle and museum

Trakošćan is a combined cultural and landscape visit: the protected complex includes the castle, surrounding buildings, a forest park and a lake. The castle’s oldest layers are thought to date to the 13th century. The Drašković family acquired it in the 16th century, and a 19th-century remodelling gave the former fortress a residential character. The museum explores the castle’s history and the lives of the counts. You can buy museum admission at reception on arrival; see the official history page before your visit.

Give the forest park its own time

The landscaped grounds pair meadows, tree groups and the lake in a romantic-style garden setting. Historically, the lake served both practical and decorative purposes. The Fairy Trail starts at the entrance to the castle complex and follows the lake through 20 interpretation points; the official estimate is about five kilometres and two hours at a leisurely pace. A fisherman’s hut serves as an information and rest stop. When checked on 16 October 2026, the official trail page reported a partial closure due to a landslide. Use open, signposted sections and check the current trail notice and follow signs when planning your walk.
