About the destination
Beneath the great plane trees
Two giant oriental plane trees are among Trsteno’s best-known landmarks. From the village, the ground falls towards a small harbour, linking this leafy setting with the coast below.
The Gučetić garden
The Gučetić estate took shape between 1494 and 1502 and continued to develop over the centuries. Today HAZU manages the arboretum, where the history of a Dubrovnik family’s country residence lives on in gardens and buildings.
Plants, stone and water
Mediterranean and introduced plants grow within the historic garden landscape. Water reached the fountain by an aqueduct seventy metres long, carried on fourteen arches. The planting and waterworks make the garden as much a story of landscape design as a collection of trees. Check the arboretum’s current visiting arrangements before travelling.
