About the destination
Walk the harbour and rising lanes
Valun sits on the western side of Cres, with stone houses rising in terraces above a sheltered bay. Begin at the modest harbour, then take the narrow lanes uphill for a different view of the settlement. Parking is above the pedestrian centre, so include the walk with luggage when choosing a place to stay.
Find the story of the Valun Tablet
The official village guide explains the early medieval Valun Tablet, written in Latin and Glagolitic scripts. It was found at St Mark’s Church by the cemetery above the present village; the original is now built into the sacristy wall of the parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Ask about church access. Nearby Glagolitic reconstructions surround the terrace by the former olive press, adding an outdoor heritage stop.
Make time for a beach
Raca beach is a pebble-shore option close to Valun. Choose a shore walk with a swim or a longer beach stay, leaving time for the uphill return. The official accommodation guide includes Valun rooms and apartments as well as Camp Zdovica, giving you a choice between village accommodation and camping near the bay.
Plan a waterfront meal
Valun has a strong association with fish dishes. Use the island restaurant directory to find a Valun address and arrange your meal; ask about the day’s offer if you want a particular dish. An evening can simply be a harbour walk after dinner. For organised culture, use the Cres events calendar and distinguish a Valun venue from one requiring a separate journey to Cres town.
