Choose a visit, not just a viewpoint
The Račić family mausoleum, designed by Ivan Meštrović, stands in St Roch’s Cemetery at the highest point of Rat peninsula. If you want to see inside, check access with the Museums and Galleries of Konavle beforehand. Come for the building and its setting together. The outlook is part of the experience, but this is not simply a terrace above the sea. Agree on the return before adding any further coast walk, so a short outing does not quietly become something much longer.
Use Our Lady of the Snows as your landmark
From the waterfront, head towards the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of the Snows. The museum describes an approach beside the monastery and another connected with Prijeko Street. Choose one on the map and follow local signs rather than promising an unverified circuit without steps. Count on an uphill section from the start. If part of your group prefers to remain by the sea, agree a specific meeting point while the others visit the mausoleum.
Pause for the stone and the space
At the top, notice the relationship between the mausoleum, cemetery and open surroundings. If entering, compare the outside impression with the interior form and the details available to view. Resist trying to capture everything from one camera angle. The shift from everyday town life to a place with a different purpose is part of the visit. Be considerate of people attending the cemetery: they are not scenery, and your conversation about the building can continue after the descent.
Keep the two peninsulas as separate choices
Back on the waterfront, look at how Rat and Sustjepan frame Cavtat’s bay. Finishing beside the sea after the climb is enough for this outing. Add the other peninsula, swimming or a boat trip only after checking your remaining time and what everyone actually wants. If the mausoleum was the reason for coming, there is no need to collect more attractions afterwards. Keep House Bukovac for another visit and give that outing to a different part of Cavtat’s artistic story.
