Treat it as a separate outing

Choose the French Road when you want a more active part of your stay. It lies on the Biokovo slope, so plan a distinct outing from the coast with a clear starting point and return. This is not something to add spontaneously when you have packed only beachwear. Open the official Brela municipality map and compare the approach with your accommodation. The tourist board’s route description starts the French Road circuit at Gornji Kričak; a detailed hiking map is available from the Brela tourist information office. Separate the time needed to reach the trail from the time you actually want to spend walking it.

Look at how a road meets a mountain

The route dates from 1810 and 1811, was never completed, and has interpretation panels explaining its construction. That gives you a reason to pay attention to the road rather than treating it merely as a way to a viewpoint. Pause where you can follow a bend and see how the route crosses the slope. With friends, compare what you noticed before reading a panel with what it helped explain. The interest does not depend on capturing a perfect panorama.

Choose your turning point early

Wear footwear suited to stony ground and bring water. The historic road’s gradient does not make the whole approach equivalent to a gentle seaside promenade. Agree how much time you want on the trail and leave space for the return. If somebody prefers a shorter outing, settle that at the start. This walk earns its place through a change of perspective and an understanding of the landscape. You do not need to add a farther summit for the day to count.

Return with a new view of Brela

Back on the coast, leave an unhurried stretch for lunch or rest. Swimming can follow if it still appeals, without committing to another ambitious route. Look back towards Biokovo and try to identify the slope you explored. If the morning does not suit walking, or your group decides it would rather stay by the sea, save the French Road for another occasion. A useful plan has one clear activity and enough time to enjoy it properly.
