First time in Motovun: gateways, the square and the town walls
Understand the hill town through its gateways, main square and ramparts, leaving space in the plan for the climb and the return to your start.

Count the approach as part of the visit
From the valley, Motovun looks like a single compact silhouette, but a visit begins with reaching its historic centre. Once parked, check your position on the map and choose your approach. Do not start counting sightseeing time only at the first gateway and then forget the walk back to the vehicle. For a first visit, make the town itself your main destination. Add wineries or neighbouring villages only if time remains and any necessary visit has been arranged.
Read the gateways before moving on
As you enter, notice the passages, walls and changes in the space around you. Motovun’s Municipal Palace once combined a public role with a defensive one. Looking at how building and passage relate is more useful than trying to memorise every date. With friends, imagine arriving when controlling entry mattered to the whole town. This gives the approach a story, rather than making it a stretch of walking between pins on a sightseeing map.
Separate the church from the bell tower
At Trg Andrea Antico, find St Stephen’s Church and the freestanding bell tower. The tower originally had a defensive role, so its significance goes beyond the bells. First look at how the two buildings shape the square, then decide whether to visit any available interiors. Entering the church, accessing the tower and walking the walls are different activities. Check what is open that day and what each ticket covers before committing to the full set.
Use the walls to understand the landscape
If the walls are accessible, give them a distinct part of the visit. The outlook over the Mirna valley explains the town’s position better than another façade. Compare the landscape with the route you used to arrive, then return through the centre. With limited visibility or little time, the square and gateways can make a complete introduction. Plan lunch and the walk back afterwards, without trying to turn one afternoon into a circuit of all Istria.
