Hvar beyond the first harbour photograph
Build a day around the square, the lanes and a view from above, with the rest of the island saved for another chapter.

Make the square your starting point
The harbour gives Hvar an immediate sense of arrival, but St Stephen's Square is a better place to begin understanding the town. Stand for a moment and look from the cathedral towards the water. Then choose a side street instead of following every movement along the quay. A small change of direction makes the town feel less like a backdrop.
Give yourself time to return to the square during the day. It becomes a useful meeting place if your group wants different things: one person can explore a cultural sight while another takes a longer coffee break. Agree on a time and keep the arrangement simple.
Choose the view, then earn the pause
If a view from above appeals, consider the walk towards Fortica. Check the current access arrangements for the fortress and choose a part of the day that suits the weather and your energy. Wear walking shoes and regard the ascent as an outing, rather than an extra squeezed between lunch and a boat departure.
On the way back, take time in the lanes instead of hurrying straight to the harbour. The transition from a broad view to small streets is part of the pleasure. A meal afterwards gives the walk a natural finish.
Separate a town day from an island day
Hvar town and the island of Hvar are different scales of travel. A day spent enjoying the town does not need to include inland villages, another harbour and an excursion on the water. Choose those plans for another day, allowing for the actual transport involved.
If you are visiting by passenger boat, confirm the departure harbour and return service before setting off. Keep the final part of your visit close enough to your departure point to enjoy it calmly. The best last memory is a relaxed look across the water, not a rushed search for the right quay.
Give the climb a place in the day
If you choose Fortica, make the walk the afternoon’s main activity rather than a gap-filler. Leave the square with enough time to walk at your own pace, pause on the way and return without watching the clock for a boat. If the weather or your energy does not suit the ascent, keep the day in town: the lanes and square already make a complete visit.
A town day can stay a town day
Before you leave the harbour area, separate any island excursion from this plan. Check the departure and return details for the day you actually intend to travel, then keep that outing independent. For today, agree where the group will meet again and leave room for a meal or another short walk near the centre.
