Mljet: give the lakes a whole day
Choose a clear starting point, a manageable lakeside walk and time for the island of St Mary.

Start with your arrival point
A satisfying day around Mljet's lakes begins before the first walk. Identify where you will arrive on the island and how you will reach the national park. Pomena, Polače and the park's inland access points lead into different routes; they are not interchangeable names on one waterfront. Use the park's current visitor information to choose a starting point that fits your transport.
Once inside, choose a lakeside walk that leaves room for pauses. The Great Lake and Small Lake are the focus, but covering every possible path is not the aim. Decide whether your day will be mainly walking, cycling or a shorter walk combined with the park boat.
Give St Mary its own time
The island of St Mary sits in the Great Lake and contains a Benedictine monastery with a church. If you would like to visit, check the day's boat arrangements before setting off on a long walk. Knowing where and when to board makes it easier to enjoy the rest of your time without repeatedly checking the clock.
Treat the crossing and the visit as a single part of the day. Allow a little space afterwards to sit by the water, compare the views and decide what still interests you. A park visit need not become a race between a bicycle return and a boat departure.
Finish where your journey works
For an afternoon walk, choose a route that brings you back towards your planned exit. Keep a map available and use marked paths. If you want to add a higher viewpoint, consider that a separate walking choice with its own time and effort, not an automatic extension of a lakeside stroll.
Before your trip, confirm park admission, transport and return connections for your date. Then keep the day itself simple. Mljet rewards the time spent looking at the water as much as the distance covered around it.
Choose one main way to experience the lakes
Before you enter the park, decide whether walking, cycling or the boat to St Mary is the main thread of your day. You can combine activities, but leave enough margin for the actual route and the current boat arrangements. If visiting St Mary matters most, check that part first; if it does not fit, a lakeside walk can still make a satisfying visit on its own.
Keep the return in view
Work backwards from your confirmed way off the island and leave a buffer for the route back to it. Avoid starting an optional climb or a longer loop if it would turn the final hour into a race. A shorter circuit with time beside the water is a good adjustment when weather, transport or energy changes the plan.
