Guide
Rijeka without a car: the market, old streets and optional Trsat
Plan 3-4 hours for the market, old streets and lunch. Have longer? Add Trsat by bus. If it rains, choose the Sugar Palace if it is open on your visit date. Duration is an editorial estimate.

Start with the Placa, move through Korzo into the Old Town, then decide over lunch whether to stay for Trsat. The centre is a complete short visit on its own.
How much time?
Allow 3-4 hours for the centre, including a coffee or simple lunch. Trsat adds roughly 2-3 hours for travel, waiting, a look around and the return. These are editorial planning estimates, not measured walking or bus times. Start in the morning if you want to shop at the market.
Getting to the start
Meet at the City Market on Ul. Vatroslava Lisinskog. From the Željeznički kolodvor bus stop, bus 2 towards Trsat serves Tržnica. Arriving by coach at Žabica? The same line also serves Tržnica from the Žabica city-bus stop. Use the operator’s stop list and current departures.
Before choosing the longer version, check your journey home for your travel date. Find coach operators and station information or check HŽPP rail travel notices. This plan covers your time within Rijeka; intercity journeys need extra time.
1. Morning at the Placa
Look around the market stalls and fish pavilion, then head towards Korzo. Arriving after trading has ended? Skip the shopping stop and begin at the City Tower. Market information.
2. Korzo and the City Tower
Take your time along Korzo, then use the City Tower as the next meeting point. Pass towards the Old Town instead of continuing along the main promenade.
3. Kobler Square and the Roman Arch
Continue through Kobler Square to the Roman Arch. Leave room for a coffee or lunch in the centre. You can finish here: the short version does not depend on an exhibition, a castle visit or catching another bus. The official city map identifies these landmarks.
4. Have longer? Add Trsat
Take bus 2 towards Trsat from Fiumara B; alight at Trsat crkva. Follow the signs to the castle at Partizanski put 9A. For the return, board at the Trsat stop towards Srdoči; Fiumara A brings you back to the centre. Check both directions and service notices before leaving.
Prefer the climb? The Petar Kružić Stairway starts at the chapel in the northwest corner of Titov Square and has more than 500 steps. Taking bus 2 avoids that long climb, but you still walk from the stop to the castle; this is not a verified step-free alternative. Check castle visiting information before making the castle your main goal; an open gate is not a guarantee that every interior or collection is open.
Rainy-day swap: the Sugar Palace
If it is open on your visit date, replace Trsat with the City Museum at Krešimirova 28, west of the centre. The Sugar Palace exhibition is an indoor look at Rijeka’s industrial and city life. From Fiumara A, bus 2 towards Srdoči serves Željeznički kolodvor; continue on foot to the museum. Consult the city map for the last stretch. If you are finishing at the railway station, walk back along the same route after the museum.
Checked 26 September 2026: Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-18:00; closed Mondays and public holidays. Standard adult admission is €8. Allow around 1-1½ hours inside as an editorial suggestion, plus your journey. Recheck museum hours and tickets before setting off.
If the museum is closed, keep the shorter centre plan or postpone it if the weather makes the outdoor sections unpleasant. The walks between stops are outside; this is not a completely sheltered route.
Finish and costs
The short visit finishes in the Old Town near Korzo. If your coach leaves from Žabica, walk back using the city map and leave time to find your departure point. If returning to the railway-station area, bus 2 towards Srdoči from Fiumara A serves Željeznički kolodvor. A meal, bus journeys and museum entry are separate costs; compare the current bus ticket options.
Step-free access has not been verified for the whole route. If you need it, check the individual stops before travelling. Practical sources rechecked: 26 September 2026.
Choose the short version before you start
If your intercity departure is fixed, begin by protecting the time needed to reach it. The centre walk can stand on its own; Trsat and the rainy-day museum are optional alternatives, not extra stops to combine automatically. Choose one based on the time and conditions you actually have, then recheck the linked operator or museum information before leaving.
Keep the transfer plan separate
Use the route details in this guide for orientation, then confirm current departures and notices with the transport operator on the day. A stop name in a plan is not a guarantee that services run unchanged. Keep a little margin for finding the right stop and returning to your departure point. If that margin disappears, finish in the centre rather than turning the final leg into a sprint.
