Zagreb for curious minds: a treasure hunt on Britanski Square

Check the antiques fair date, then look for one object with a story.

Check the date first

Britanski Square hosts antiques fairs, so confirm that one is taking place on your chosen day. This outing depends on the traders being there. Set a modest budget and a theme: an old postcard, an unusual everyday object or a gift for someone who dislikes standard souvenirs.

Arrive along Ilica

Start at Ban Jelačić Square and follow Ilica west. Britanski trg, also called Britanac, opens to the north of Ilica, on your right as you arrive from the centre. Walk into the square to reach the market area.

Browse before buying

Make a first circuit without purchasing anything. Ask about condition, dimensions and what the seller knows about an item’s history. Enjoy the story without treating confidence as proof of authenticity or value. Work out transport before buying anything bulky and leave room in your bag for smaller finds.

Give your search a question

If you choose postcards, look for a scene you recognise or would like to find in the city. For an everyday object, imagine where and how you would use it at home. For a gift, look for a connection with the recipient’s interests. Let that question narrow your search instead of trying to inspect every stall; the objects available will shape the hunt.

Ask before handling an item. With the seller’s permission, look at both sides of a postcard and its corners; for a cup or dish, look at the rim, base and any visible repairs. With a set, check which pieces are included. Note what you can actually see separately from what the seller tells you.

Use the second circuit to decide

Remember the stall where your favourite object is and return after browsing. Compare its condition, asking price and usefulness with the other things you noticed. Decide whether you want that particular object enough to carry it home. If something essential is unclear, leave it and keep the story of the search.

Give the outing a second ending

If there is no fair or nothing appeals, continue towards Flower Square, Cvjetni trg, and find somewhere for coffee. Compare the objects that caught your attention and why. With the seller’s permission, a photograph might be the souvenir you actually want; you do not have to carry something home.

Follow Ilica to Flower Square

Back on Ilica, head east towards Ban Jelačić Square. Continue past Frankopanska and Gundulićeva, then turn right into Ulica sv. Preobraženja, also known as Preobraženska. Follow it to Cvjetni trg, whose official name is Trg Petra Preradovića.

The Orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration stands on the square’s northern side, and Petar Preradović’s statue is in the middle. Use the statue as your meeting point before choosing a café. If there was no fair, give the walk its own small hunt: each pick a shop-window detail or a facade feature along Ilica to describe over coffee.
