Zagreb in three pictures: an afternoon in Maksimir

A lake, a woodland detail and a portrait turn a simple walk into a shared memory.

Choose three subjects

Head to Maksimir with a small challenge: each person gets just three final photographs. Make one a lake view, one a woodland detail and one a portrait of your companion. A phone is enough. The limit gives you a reason to pause and look carefully instead of constantly checking a stream of pictures.

Meet at the main entrance

Start at the main portal beside Maksimirska cesta, on the park’s southern edge. Make this your return point as well. The straight main avenue leads towards Vidikovac; for this outing, first take the park path to Prvo jezero, the First Lake. Keep the Croatian names on your map so they are easy to match with local signs.

Keep the first loop short

Use the park map to choose one lake and a turning point. There is no need to cover every lake or pavilion. Stay on marked paths, leave wildlife undisturbed and take your photographs from the path. Decide whether to extend the walk only when everyone has finished the first loop.

First picture: Prvo jezero

Prvo jezero is an artificial lake in the southern part of Maksimir, created in 1839 as the park was being shaped. For your lake photograph, choose a view from the path that includes both water and trees. Before pressing the shutter, decide whether the bank or its reflection carries the picture; on a rippled surface, look for changing lines and patches of colour instead.

Second picture: a detail on the way to Vidikovac

Return from the lake to the main avenue by the path you used to reach it, then continue towards Vidikovac. This prominent building is also known as the Kiosk and dates from 1841-1843. Use its base as your turning point. The walk does not depend on entering the building or using its terrace.

Along the wooded edge of the avenue, choose one small subject you can see from the path: grooves in bark, a leaf’s veins or the crossing of two branches. Look behind it as well. A quieter background can make the detail easier to notice than a frame full of competing shapes. Leave the subject where it is.

Third picture: your companion and the avenue

Near the turning point, use the line of the avenue to place your companion within the park rather than filling the whole frame with their face. Look for even light and check that a trunk does not seem to grow out of their head. Swap photographer and subject so both of you appear in the day’s three-picture story.

Return by the same avenue, or stop at the lake

From the foot of Vidikovac, follow the straight avenue back to the main portal. For a shorter outing, turn back after Prvo jezero and leave Vidikovac out. You can make the woodland-detail and portrait photographs beside the paths on that return leg, so the three subjects still fit into the smaller walk.

Pick a favourite together

Compare your photographs on a bench and choose the image that best captures the afternoon. Posting can wait. Private photography does not require special permission; commercial shoots follow the park authority’s application process. Check current notices from Priroda Grada Zagreba and the weather before setting out.
