Zagreb in two days: Upper Town and green squares

A one-night plan with the City Museum, two walks and time for lunch. Arrival, departure and a rainy Sunday are covered too.

Jump to a section

Two days, one night: the Upper Town on Saturday, then a slower Sunday around Zrinjevac and the green squares. Meet at Trg bana Jelačića and keep the second day close to the main railway station. There is room for a long lunch and a change of plan if it rains.

Before you go

This plan assumes arrival by late Saturday morning and departure on Sunday afternoon, with one night in Zagreb. Allow 5-6 hours for Saturday’s walk, museum and lunch, and 3-4 hours on Sunday with a café stop and the optional garden. All durations below are editorial planning estimates, not measured journeys. Travel to Zagreb, accommodation and dinner are separate.

Upper Town means slopes and uneven surfaces; some approaches have steps. The route does not require the funicular or cathedral interiors. For a step-free visit, confirm the approach and individual entrances separately. Open the official city map and follow local access signs around St Mark’s Square.

Arrival: from either station to the start

From Glavni kolodvor, leave towards King Tomislav Square and walk north through Strossmayer Square and Zrinjevac, then along Praška to Trg bana Jelačića. Allow roughly 20-30 minutes without sightseeing. With luggage, tram 6 towards Črnomerec also serves the main square.

From the Autobusni kolodvor tram stop, take tram 6 towards Črnomerec to Trg bana Jelačića. It passes Glavni kolodvor and Zrinjevac. Check line 6 and the weekend timetable and current service changes before boarding; allow extra time to reach your platform and for waiting.

Saturday: the Upper Town, together in one day

1. Radićeva, Stone Gate and St Mark’s

From Trg bana Jelačića, go uphill along Radićeva towards Kamenita vrata, then continue towards St Mark’s Church. Use the church as an outside landmark and follow the permitted route around the square. Allow about an hour for the approach, photographs and short stops before heading to Opatička.

2. Zagreb City Museum, then lunch

Visit Zagreb City Museum at Opatička 20. Saturday 10:00-18:00; Sunday 10:00-14:00. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing; closed on Mondays and public holidays. Standard adult admission: €8. Allow 1-1½ hours for a selected look around, then stop for lunch. Hours and price checked 26 September 2026.

3. Finish at Strossmayer Promenade

After lunch, continue to Strossmayer Promenade for a view across the city. When ready, return towards the Lower Town via the signed street route through Mesnička and Ilica, or retrace your approach. The meeting point at the end is Trg bana Jelačića. Leave the evening for a café, dinner and your own plans.

Sunday: Zrinjevac, green squares and an optional garden

Start at Zrinjevac around 09:30 as a suggested meeting time. Walk south through Strossmayer Square to King Tomislav Square. Allow 45-60 minutes with pauses; these are parts of the Green Horseshoe, rather than a circuit of every square. The main railway station is already close by if you need the short version.

For the longer version, continue west along Mihanovićeva towards the Botanical Garden and return to Glavni kolodvor afterwards. Add roughly 45-60 minutes inside only if the garden is open for your date. Check the garden’s visitor information and entrance before setting off. If it is closed, finish with a café stop or lunch by the public squares; the garden is an optional detour.

Rain on Sunday? Start indoors at 10:00

Replace the garden and longer park walk with the Archaeological Museum, Trg Nikole Šubića Zrinskog 19, beside Zrinjevac. Sunday hours are 10:00-13:00, with last entry at 12:40; closed Mondays and public holidays. Standard admission is €8. Aim for opening and allow 1-1½ hours for selected collections. Checked 26 September 2026.

Afterwards, take a café break, then continue towards the station when the rain allows or use tram 6 towards Sopot from Zrinjevac. The connections between stops are outdoors. If the museum has a special closure, keep a short café-and-departure morning; do not assume another museum will be open on Sunday afternoon.

Late arrival or early departure

Arriving on Saturday afternoon? Choose the museum first if there is time for a worthwhile visit before the 17:30 last entry, then take a short Upper Town walk. If you miss it, either skip it or move it to Sunday at 10:00 and shorten the Lower Town plan. Choose between that museum visit and the Sunday rain alternative; fitting both is not the aim.

Leaving before noon on Sunday? Keep Zrinjevac and the walk towards Glavni kolodvor; skip the garden. If departure leaves too little time after 10:00, skip museums too. Work backwards from your booked service and leave time to collect luggage and find the correct platform.

Finish and costs

The Sunday walk finishes at Glavni kolodvor. From Zrinjevac, walk south through the squares to the station. For the bus station, board tram 6 towards Sopot at Zrinjevac or Glavni kolodvor and alight at Autobusni kolodvor. Use the current timetable for your departure rather than a fixed journey time.

Budget separately for museum admission, any garden entry, trams, meals and accommodation. This is a route to adapt, not a package with included bookings. Practical museum and transport sources checked 26 September 2026; recheck them for your own weekend. Explore more: Zagreb.
