About the destination
Baška suits a holiday shared by someone who wants to swim and someone who always asks what is around the corner. At the end of a valley in southeastern Krk, the sea has an obvious pull. The old lanes, hilltop church and nearby Jurandvor give you several good reasons to dry off and keep exploring. You can choose one of them each day, with plenty of time left for the beach.
Find your bearings by the water
Vela plaža is the long pebble beach around the bay: roughly 1.8 kilometres of it. Use it as an orientation point before choosing where to spend the day. A beach with cafés and restaurants nearby makes a different plan from a remote cove; think about what your group will actually need between swims.
Then take a turn into the stone lanes of the older settlement. For another view of the setting, the church of St John the Baptist stands above Baška, overlooking the valley and the island of Prvić. Treat that ascent as a walk of its own and choose footwear for it.
Leave room for a different alphabet
The Baška Glagolitic Trail places 32 stone sculptures bearing letters across the valley. Use the official guide to choose a few that fit your route. Picking one unfamiliar sign to recognise again is a pleasant little task for the walk.
St Lucy’s Church is in Jurandvor, a separate village near Baška. Here a replica helps explain the setting of the Baška Tablet, a Glagolitic inscription from around 1100; the original is held by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. Read our story of its thirteen lines before your visit, then look at the church with the inscription in mind.
Make the day fit
For a first visit, combine the waterfront and old lanes with either the St John viewpoint or Jurandvor. Check church access before travelling and use Visit Baška for local maps and planning. Consult municipal notices for changes to waterfront access. Keep the rest of the day free to follow whichever part of Baška has caught your interest.
