About the destination
Start at Pile Gate and follow Stradun into the Old City. Choose one longer visit: the city walls for views, or the Rector’s Palace for history. Leave time for a meal and a slow wander. Our suggestion is half a day for an introduction or a full day with a longer visit; this is an editorial estimate.
Before you set out
Plan your visit
Choose the pace, check the journey and keep a second option for the day.
Time to allow
Allow half a day for Pile, Stradun and the old harbour, with a stop in the side streets. Keep a full day if you add the walls or a museum and lunch. These are editorial planning estimates; the wall walk needs its own time and energy.
Without a car
Use Libertas to choose a bus to Pile from your actual starting point. Explore the old town on foot, then return by the service that suits your accommodation. Check the current timetable and notices; Gruž harbour and the old harbour are different departure points.
Arriving by car
Check the current vehicle-access arrangements before driving towards the historic centre. If your accommodation includes parking, ask the host to confirm the approach and any required vehicle registration. Choose a car park using official information; a navigation route does not establish permission to enter.
Rain, heat and a change of plan
Walk the exposed walls in a cooler part of the day if conditions suit. For rain or strong heat, consider the Cultural History Museum in the Rector’s Palace or the Maritime Museum. Check opening times and tickets separately; stone lanes and steps can be slippery.
