Hum

A tiny Istrian town with an outsized story: a remarkable gate, Glagolitic lettering and a road that turns an alphabet into a landscape.

About the destination

Some city breaks need a spreadsheet. Hum asks for a closer look. In inland Istria, this small walled settlement puts the scale of a town within easy reach: a gate, houses, a tower and public spaces gathered on a hill. It is widely known as the world’s smallest town. Come for that curious reputation; stay interested in what fits inside.

Start at the gate

The entrance deserves more than a passing photograph. Its copper doors carry a rural calendar in twelve medallions, while the handles take the shape of ox horns. Try finding the sequence before walking on. Hum’s story is already there in miniature: work, seasons and a community making its life within a small space.

The parish church and the cemetery church of St Jerome are different places. St Jerome is associated with medieval wall paintings and Glagolitic graffiti; if seeing its interior is the point of your trip, arrange access information through the local tourist office before travelling.

Let Roč be part of the day

The Glagolitic Alley connects Roč and Hum over roughly seven kilometres. Its monuments commemorate the script and the people who used it. Including a few of those stops gives the town context: the lettering is part of this region’s cultural history, rather than a decorative motif for souvenirs.

Choose your transport and stops before setting out. The monuments follow a road; the seven-kilometre connection should not be mistaken for a continuous traffic-free footpath. In Hum, make the compact streets the walking part of the visit and follow the parking arrangements on arrival.

For a first visit, keep the plan simple: the gate, a wander through the settlement and one thread to follow in more depth, whether that is lettering, architecture or the route from Roč. Small need not mean hurried.
