Island or archipelago
Korčula
Korčula is an island of walled-town culture, wine villages and a western harbour at Vela Luka. Choose your base around those different centres and leave time for meals, coastal pauses and an evening performance.

About the destination
Explore Korčula town
Begin in the walled town’s stone lanes around St Mark’s Cathedral, then follow the streets down towards the waterfront. The Town Museum adds context on the island’s history and crafts. For the evening, look for Moreška, the local sword-dance tradition, in the current cultural programme. Choose a performance date before arranging dinner around it. A town-based day leaves time to return to favourite lanes after the main sightseeing.
Follow the wine villages
The island’s wine geography offers a practical way to choose an excursion. Lumbarda, towards the east, is associated with Grk and sandy vineyards; Čara and Smokvica in the interior are known for Pošip. Pick one area for cellar visits and village time. Arrange tastings with the producers and organise the return journey before drinking. These are separate village landscapes, with their own roads and accommodation options.
Give the west time
Vela Luka deserves its own harbour walk and cultural stop. The local museum collections include finds from Vela spila, the important prehistoric cave above the town. A museum visit and a climb to the cave offer related but distinct experiences; ask about cave access before setting off uphill. Staying at the western end makes it easier to include a second outing nearby without returning across the island after every visit.
Choose a meal with local roots
In Žrnovo, look for handmade makaruni, commonly served with a rich sauce. The island’s food guide also highlights fish dishes and sweets such as cukarini and klašuni. A village meal can anchor a wine-country day, while waterfront restaurants suit a town evening. Ask about the preparation of any special dish when reserving; a tasting with small bites and a full dinner are different choices.
Match port and accommodation
For an eastern arrival, the Orebić-Dominče ferry crosses from Pelješac; Dominče and the old-town waterfront are distinct arrival points. Vela Luka is the western harbour and another possible island gateway. Compare the actual port on your booking with your chosen base in the official accommodation listings. Korčula town suits repeated cultural evenings, Lumbarda a village-and-vineyard stay, and Vela Luka western exploration. For a longer holiday, splitting nights between east and west can reduce repeated cross-island journeys.
Before you set out
A stone town, with an island beyond.
Meet Korčula through its streets and waterfront first. Exploring the rest of the island calls for a separate transport plan.
Walk through the old centre
Alternate the passages inside the town with views from the waterfront. Give a museum or cultural space more time if the stories behind the façades interest you.
Build culture into an evening
Check the current programme for Moreška and other events. Choose a performance that fits your dates; do not assume it takes place every night.
Distinguish the arrival ports
Before buying transport, confirm whether you arrive in Korčula town, Dominče or another part of the island. Match accommodation and onward travel to that landing point.
Slow down for lunch
Give the island’s food some time without rushing for another boat. Check current menus and arrange transport if your plans take you beyond town.
