Poreč

Walk Roman streets, admire the Euphrasian Basilica and enjoy an old town where mosaics, stone lanes and the Adriatic waterfront meet.

About the destination

Poreč is one of Istria’s most rewarding towns to explore on foot. Its historic centre still follows the Roman street plan, with Decumanus running through a compact peninsula of stone houses, small squares and glimpses of the sea. The rhythm is easy: begin among the old lanes, pause for architectural details and finish along the waterfront.

The Euphrasian Basilica

The town’s essential landmark is the Euphrasian Basilica complex, celebrated for its early Byzantine mosaics. The ensemble includes the church, atrium, baptistery, bishop’s palace and archaeological remains, so allow more time than a quick church visit. The gold-backed apse mosaics are the highlight, but the sequence of spaces is what makes the site memorable. Check current visiting arrangements, especially during religious services.

Roman streets and old-town layers

Follow Decumanus and the lanes that branch from it to see how Roman foundations, medieval houses and later Venetian details overlap. Marafor Square marks the ancient forum area, while towers and palaces reveal the town’s long trading history. Early morning and late afternoon are especially pleasant for an unhurried walk.

Plan your time

A half day covers the historic core and basilica; a full day leaves room for the waterfront, a swim or a relaxed meal. Poreč also works well as a base for inland Istria, but its centre deserves to be experienced at walking pace rather than treated as a brief stop.

Where to stay, eat and go out

Poreč has hotels in the old town and along the coast, as well as campsites and other accommodation in the wider area. Check the exact location and seasonal facilities before booking: a waterfront resort and a room in the historic centre make for different visits.

For food, the old town mixes fish restaurants, Istrian taverns and informal street food. The local tourist board lists restaurants across Poreč and nearby settlements; verify each venue’s current menu and opening times directly.

Summer evenings bring bars and music to the waterfront. The Poreč tourist board’s nightlife directory lists Coco Club and Saint & Sinner among its venues, but its directory is not a live programme. Confirm current events, season and opening hours with the venue before heading out.
