Stari Grad

Stari Grad connects Škor Square and Hektorović’s Tvrdalj residence with a plain retaining ancient field divisions. Its long bay opens onto Hvar’s agricultural and literary history.

About the destination

A harbour town on Hvar

This is Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. Begin along the sheltered harbour, then turn into the lanes leading towards Škor Square. Keep this first part of the visit deliberately slow: the relationship between the waterfront and the small spaces behind it is part of the town’s appeal. Add Tvrdalj, the fortified residence of poet Petar Hektorović, if you want a focused heritage visit.

Town and plain tell different stories

At Tvrdalj, the fishpond and surrounding architecture offer a more intimate encounter than a general town walk. The Stari Grad Plain is a separate landscape outside the centre, known for its ancient field divisions. Give it its own walking or cycling plan rather than treating it as another square around the corner. If you only have a short stop, stay with the harbour, lanes and one interior.

Before you set out

Check access to Tvrdalj and consult the official Stari Grad Plain guide before choosing a route. Carry water and sun protection for a rural outing. If arriving by ferry, check your own sailing and onward transfer arrangements; do not use a town sightseeing plan as a transport timetable.

Before you set out

Plan your visit

Choose the pace, check the journey and keep a second option for the day.

Time to allow

Allow half a day for the harbour, Škor Square and Tvrdalj, with a meal if time permits. This is an editorial estimate for Stari Grad on Hvar. Give the Stari Grad Plain its own walking or cycling outing rather than treating it as another town square.

Without a car

The Stari Grad ferry port lies outside the town centre. Check your sailing, onward transfer and return separately. A ticket to Stari Grad does not mean arrival on the old harbour promenade; Hvar town is another destination on the island.

Arriving by car

Confirm vehicle carriage and booking conditions for your ferry, then arrange parking with your host or follow public parking signs. Keep the old streets as a walking visit. Do not assume a ferry ticket reserves a town parking space or onward bus seat.

Rain, heat and a change of plan

Check Tvrdalj’s seasonal visiting arrangements; its fishpond and garden do not make it a fully indoor attraction. For rain, confirm an open museum or gallery. In heat, leave a rural outing in the plain for cooler hours and carry water.
