About the destination
Choose a base that fits your days
Plan Istria as a region with several different stays, rather than a single resort. On the west coast, compare Poreč and Rovinj for a holiday built around old-town walks and time by the sea. Pula gives a southern base with a strong Roman focus. Labin and Rabac offer an eastern alternative, pairing an old town associated with artists’ studios with a coastal destination. For an inland stay, look at the central towns and countryside in the official destination directory. Choose the base after deciding which places you most want to visit.
Give the coastal towns their own time
In Pula, make the Roman amphitheatre the anchor of a cultural day, leaving room to explore the old town rather than rushing straight on. Poreč offers a different focus: the sixth-century Euphrasian Basilica and its mosaics, set within a town that preserves its ancient street layout. Check the basilica visitor information before planning an interior visit. In Rovinj, follow the narrow streets toward St Euphemia’s Church and the sea views from its plateau. Pick one main town per outing if you also want an unhurried meal or a swim.
Leave a day for the interior
Use Motovun, Grožnjan or Pazin as starting points for a different day among Istria’s inland settlements and landscapes. A practical approach is to select one town for a longer wander and one additional stop, instead of trying to collect every village on the map. If your plans include a tasting or a particular restaurant, contact the venue first and arrange transport around the visit. For walking or cycling, check the chosen route and surface separately; a scenic road itinerary does not establish a suitable footpath.
Plan connections before booking
The tourist board’s travel planning pages separate arrival by car, bus, plane, train and boat. Use them to identify options, then verify the actual connection for your dates and the final journey to your accommodation. Without a car, check the return journey before committing to an inland excursion. Keep some flexible time for weather, bathing and the places you discover along the way.
