Destination

Novalja

Explore Novalja beyond its beaches: a waterfront town with Roman engineering, local heritage and easy access to contrasting landscapes on Pag.

About the destination

Novalja is best known as a summer base, but the town has a quieter historical character that rewards a closer look. Its waterfront, compact centre and stone-lined surroundings offer an accessible introduction to the northern part of Pag island.

Town centre and waterfront

Begin along the seafront, then turn into the streets around the centre. Cafés and boats set the contemporary rhythm, while archaeological finds and local collections point to much older settlement. The Town Museum is the most useful starting point for understanding this continuity.

Talijanova buža

Novalja’s most unusual heritage site is Talijanova buža, an ancient Roman underground aqueduct cut through solid rock. About 1,050 metres of the ancient channel survive; it once carried water to the settlement. A visitor section is accessed through the Town Museum, where the engineering achievement can be placed in its archaeological context. Check current access and museum hours before visiting.

Choose the right beach

The wider Novalja area offers very different coastal experiences. Planjka near Stara Novalja is known for an easier beach day, Caska combines a bay with traces of ancient settlement, and Zrće has an international club scene. Treat them as separate outings and choose according to the atmosphere you want rather than expecting one beach to represent the whole destination.

Plan your time

A half day is enough for the centre and museum; a full day allows for a beach or a drive through Pag’s stark, open landscape. In high summer, reserve the middle of the day for shade and explore the town in the morning or evening.

Stay, eat and go out

Novalja has different bases for different trips. Hotel Olea offers hotel rooms and private villas in town, while Camping Straško offers camping and mobile homes by the coast. Check each property’s location, season, availability and booking terms directly.

For a taste of Pag, look for local cheese, lamb and island wines. The Novalja tourist board’s food guide covers local specialties; Boškinac is a specific restaurant and winery outside the town centre. Confirm menus, opening dates and reservations before visiting.

For nightlife, Zrće is the nearby beach-club area, not the town waterfront. Papaya Club describes summer parties and DJ nights there; check its current events calendar for the programme on your chosen date.

For beach conditions and a choice between family-oriented Planjka, archaeological Caska and Zrće, see the official beach guide. For the Roman aqueduct, use the museum’s site.
