Meet Croatia: choose the trip before the route

Coastal towns, island crossings, forest paths or a weekend inland? Start with the kind of day you want, then choose a part of Croatia that gives it room.

Jump to a section

Before your group saves its twentieth place, agree on one thing: what would make this a good trip? A city you can explore on foot, several days beside the sea, a forest walk or a long lunch between small towns? Croatia offers all of these, but a useful plan starts by choosing rather than collecting.

These four starting points are practical groupings for travellers, not administrative borders. Pick one base and one contrasting outing. Keep the rest for a return.

Istria and Kvarner: coast, towns and islands

Begin with Rovinj if you want lanes and a waterfront, then give inland Istria its own day. Around Roč and Hum, Glagolitic monuments offer a thread to follow between settlements. A town gate can be as good a reason to stop as a sea view. Choose a few places and check the driving connections.

Rijeka, Opatija and the islands of Cres and Lošinj give you different starting points around the northern Adriatic. For a city visit, try Rijeka on foot. For an island stay, settle the arrival port, onward transport and return connection before filling the days. An island name alone is not a transport plan.

Dalmatia: choose your stretch of coast

Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik are distinct bases along a long coastline. Choose one area before adding an island crossing or inland excursion. Our Šibenik introduction is one place to begin. A stay with a city morning and a different landscape later can be more satisfying than moving accommodation every day.

Zagreb, the north and the highlands: change the view

Zagreb’s Upper and Lower Town, Varaždin’s façades, Krapina’s archaeology and Karlovac’s Dubovac Castle give different reasons to stop. A Zagreb weekend leaves room to explore the capital properly; another town need not become an obligatory extra.

Let the path determine the day. Plitvice Lakes offers several lake-tour programmes; Risnjak’s Leska educational trail introduces a forest landscape near Crni Lug. These are different visits, not interchangeable green dots. Consult the park’s visitor information, weather and current route conditions before committing.

Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem: give the east time

Slavonski Brod’s Korzo, Osijek’s Drava riverfront and Đakovo’s cathedral and Lipizzaners offer concrete starting points beyond the coast. Open our Đakovo guide if that contrast appeals. Vineyards can provide another reason to explore, but cellar visits need their own arrangements. Share one regional choice with your travelling companion, and ask which detail would make them want to go.
