About the destination
Choose a route before a checklist
Start with the kind of trip you want: city culture, time on the coast, inland nature or a mix with enough time between stops. For a shorter stay, choose one main region and nearby excursions. On a longer journey, connect a few bases and allow travel days between them. A map full of appealing towns is a starting point, not a promise that they all fit into one holiday.
Consider the continental side
Zagreb combines the medieval Upper Town and Kaptol with the Lower Town’s squares and parks. Plan time on foot and a café break, using the city tourist board’s overview to choose your focus. Farther east, Osijek offers Tvrđa and walks beside the Drava. Nearby Kopački rit introduces the wetlands of Baranja and a different nature experience from the coast. The Slavonia and Baranja guide is a useful starting point for combining city heritage with a planned park visit.
Match coast and nature to your interests
In Istria, choose between Pula’s Roman heritage, western coastal towns such as Rovinj and Poreč, and the inland settlements. Plitvice Lakes is a separate park outing: select a signed programme for your walking ability and available time. The official route descriptions distinguish the two main entrances and combinations of walking, boats and panoramic vehicles. Check current access before booking your day.
In Dalmatia, Split offers a lived-in historic centre within and around Diocletian’s Palace, with markets and the Riva nearby. Give the city its own time before adding an island. Marjan and the city’s beaches provide alternatives to another monument visit; choose according to the day’s conditions and your energy.
Build the journey around real connections
For islands, distinguish a vehicle ferry from a passenger catamaran or ship. Jadrolinija’s fleet guide explains the difference; use the actual route search and boarding guidance for your dates, departure port and reservation rules. Confirm onward transport from the arrival harbour and your return before committing to accommodation. Avoid a tight connection between a sea crossing and an essential flight. Keep a flexible day for weather, a longer walk or simply staying somewhere you enjoy.
