Split between the palace, Riva and Marjan

Discover Split through Diocletian's Palace, the Riva waterfront and Marjan's wooded slopes, where Roman heritage remains woven into everyday city life.

About the destination

Split’s historic centre developed within and around Diocletian’s Palace, where ancient spaces remain part of everyday city life. From the Peristyle and palace passages, visitors can continue towards the Riva, while Marjan above the city offers wooded paths and viewpoints. The palace, individual attractions and Marjan do not share a single visitor-access arrangement.

Before you set out

Plan your visit

Choose the pace, check the journey and keep a second option for the day.

Time to allow

Keep half a day for the palace streets, Pazar and Riva; allow a full day for Marjan or a museum and a relaxed meal. These are editorial estimates. If a ferry sets your schedule, finish the walk with time left for reaching the correct berth and boarding.

Without a car

Promet Split publishes city routes and an interactive bus map. Check your stop rather than assuming every service uses the main bus station by the port. For Trogir or Omiš, check the relevant suburban line and return before treating either as an easy addition.

Arriving by car

Use Split Parking information to choose a garage or car park, then explore the palace area on foot. Leave room for port traffic in your plan. Parking and ferry vehicle queues are separate arrangements; confirm both if you are continuing to an island.

Rain, heat and a change of plan

For heat, walk Marjan or the old streets earlier and leave the exposed waterfront for later. In rain, choose an indoor visit such as the palace substructures or a current museum exhibition, after checking access. Marjan’s longer paths and climbs need a separate walking plan.

Before you go

Check current opening times, tickets and possible restrictions separately for every museum, church or interior. Before visiting Marjan, check current official notices for paths, access and transport.
