Island or archipelago

Mljet

Mljet is a whole island of woodland, coves and small settlements, with a national park in its western part. Choose your arrival port and base before dividing time between lakes and the wider island.

About the destination

Separate the island and park

Mljet National Park protects the island’s north-western landscape, including the sea-filled Great and Small Lakes. The park’s settlement guide also identifies places outside its boundary, including Sobra, Babino Polje and Saplunara. This distinction matters when booking: an address on Mljet does not automatically place you near the lakes. Choose a western base for repeated park visits, or allow transfers when exploring from elsewhere on the island.

Choose a lake route

Walking and cycling routes connect Pomena and Polače with the lakes. Consult the official cycling map before choosing a bicycle: routes can include gravel, climbs and stony descents as well as lakeside roads. A short walk and time beside the water may suit you better than a full circuit. St Mary’s islet in the Great Lake has a Benedictine monastery; check current park admission and boat arrangements before building the crossing into your route.

Look beyond the lakes

For another day, the tourist board’s island exploration guide introduces the eastern side, including Prožura, Okuklje and Saplunara’s sandy beaches. These are separate island outings rather than extra stops on a lakeside stroll. Select one area and check the journey back to your accommodation. Carry water and appropriate footwear, and follow marked paths in protected areas.

Connect the journey and stay

Jadrolinija’s Prapratno-Sobra route connects Pelješac with Mljet. Check its current timetable and your onward island transfer together; arrival at Sobra is not arrival at the lake paths. When booking accommodation, ask about access from your actual port, meal options and bicycle or other transport arrangements. For a short visit, prioritise either a park day or one wider-island area instead of depending on several tight connections.
