Destination
Makarska
Makarska puts the sea in front and Biokovo immediately behind. Walk Kalalarga, continue towards Saint Peter and Osejava, then choose between a beach day and mountain plans.

About the destination
Plan the waterfront walk and Biokovo separately. A mountain outing needs extra time, suitable equipment and access checks before departure.
Read the old centre street by street
Start with Kalalarga, the historic core’s oldest and most important street, then turn toward Kačić Square. The Tourist Board points out stone paving, Dalmatian façades and Baroque details such as carved coats of arms, balconies and decorated doorways. The square remains a place to pause for a coffee as well as a setting for civic life. Nearby cultural stops include the Cathedral of St Mark, the Venetian fountain, the Franciscan monastery and its Malacological Museum, and Tonoli Palace. Use the official culture guide to choose which interiors or collections to add; check current visitor details with each venue.
Choose a base that fits your plans
Compare the city’s hotels and private stays by exact address and the kind of visit you plan. If you expect to spend time in the historic core, check the walk from your lodging; if beach time is central, confirm the route to the shore and what is included in the booking. The Tourist Information Centre advises on accommodation at Obala kralja Tomislava 16.
Try the town’s own flavours
Look for Makarana cake, a traditional dessert made with almonds, citrus and liqueur. Local food includes fish and vegetables, while Makarska-style pašticada is a variation on the Dalmatian beef dish. Use these as starting points when comparing menus. The Tourist Board’s gastronomy guide explains the regional food traditions and helps you explore beyond familiar seafood choices. Ask restaurants what is available that day rather than assuming every seasonal ingredient is always offered.
Plan an evening around the calendar
Kačić Square and the old streets are places to linger after a daytime visit, and Makarska’s official programme adds concerts, cultural events and seasonal gatherings at different venues. Summer events may also animate the promenade, but the programme changes by date and season. Check the current events calendar before arranging dinner around a performance. For a low-key evening, browse the central lanes and choose a café or restaurant based on the current offer. The Tourist Information Centre can also point visitors to current cultural and entertainment information.
Before you set out
Plan your visit
Choose the pace, check the journey and keep a second option for the day.
Time to allow
Allow half a day for the centre and waterfront, or a full day with one museum and a coastal extension. This is an editorial estimate. Choose Sveti Petar or Osejava rather than trying to fit both into a short stop, and check current path access before leaving.
Without a car
Makarska Bus Station publishes arrivals and departures by date. Check both journeys and leave time between the bus and any booked visit. The station is in the city; an excursion into Biokovo still needs a separate transport and access plan.
Arriving by car
Confirm parking with your accommodation or use signed public parking and read the current conditions on arrival. Leave the car for a central walking visit. Do not assume a waterfront route provides vehicle access to every beach or peninsula.
Rain, heat and a change of plan
For rain, check the Malacological Museum or the City Museum’s currently open venues. A museum’s address alone does not confirm which collections are open. In hot weather, shorten the exposed walk and move it to a cooler hour; respect any closures around Osejava.
